Members of the House and Senate write regarding oversight and protocols of weapon exports.
This week, some members of Congress wrote to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo about her department’s management of assault weapon exports. Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Chris Murphy of Connecticut were joined by Representatives Joaquin Castro of Texas and Norma Torres of California in writing that they have “grave concern about Commerce Department actions that have weakened oversight of assault weapon and high-capacity magazine exports, padding the gun industry’s profits while putting deadly weapons in the hands of corrupt actors around the world.”
During President Trump’s administration, the licensing oversight for assault weapon exports was moved from the State Department’s jurisdiction to the Commerce Department. This move eased firearm export protocol overall. The change created a 30% increase in gun exports within the first 16 months of its implementation.
